I always used a percolator when I was younger, but decided to switch to a drip coffee maker when they were the new thing. For various reasons I ordered this on Monday, received it early morning on Tuesday and got busy. The intense smell of the brewing coffee was wonderful — which wasn’t the case with my drip pots. The coffee itself was rich and HOT, so good. I found that I can reduce the amount of ground coffee I’d been using to get rich coffee from the drip pot, so there’s a bit of economy there. It also takes up much less space on my countertops. This is a great coffee maker and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in it. UPDATE: I still like this percolator very much. There are two things I would call attention to: FIRST, The instructions say to take off the lid by pulling the top knob. I DO NOT do this. I have had experience in the past with other percolators and know that the knobs can be broken and hard to replace. For this reason, I always remove the lid by gently turning and lifting the entire lid by the sides. SECOND, I have seen comments from users that the percolator did not make coffee, even though it went through its cycle. You MUST make sure the tube is seated directly into the matching well inside the pot. I missed the correct seating on two occasions, and got no coffee for my efforts. When that happened, I simply poured out the hot water and refilled the pot with cold water to start over. If you are in doubt about the tube being seated correctly you can insert the tube first and then put the basket onto the tube before filling it with the ground coffee. I do this sometimes, just to make sure. I have not had problems with grounds in the finished coffee, but if that happened, a paper filter would likely take care of the problem.

Yeah it’s a percolator, but it’s hard to beat! Of course these are harder to clean than a drip coffee maker. And yeah the heater core is aluminum, along with the cap is a hard plastic. But that doesn’t compare to the full plastic components of heating in a normal drip coffee maker that would add more toxins to a general cup of coffee. The cool thing about percolators, is there brewing extraction. You end up using less coffee to make the same amount. I found in the 12 cup, between 32 g and 34 g is ideal for my family. The auto function works perfectly, and on this model the light goes from red to blue when it’s in warm mode that stays on for approximately 2 hours. The brewing cycle is between 9-11 minutes. If it doesn’t start percolating that water up to that cap within 1-2 minutes, you may not have put the percolator pipe centered in the unit. These are much easier to pack for a trip, and I love these for that reason alone. I, like many people, poke a hole in a normal coffee filter, and measure my coffee into the basket. I use a CR2032 battery that’s dead, as I pour grounds into the basket so that way it doesn’t go in the hole on the scale:) as far as grounds getting at the bottom a little bit, that’s a good trade-off compared to the extraction and the flavor, that can’t be matched. And so what?!! just don’t drink the last half a cup!! You know you didn’t drink the last half a cup on your drip coffee maker because it burned! Also I love this one because of the base easily connecting it and reconnecting it without unplugging it. And I can just hide the base behind something, so it’s out of the way and not even on the counter, until I need to use it again. PS. I read a lot of reviews saying the caps would crack, and to get the glass alternative. So I did that. I have yet to put the glass ones on there, because the plastic has never cracked. So I would say that it might not be necessary to get the glass. Anyway, if you have not tried a percolator, or you’ve had one and want to upgrade, this is the one! enjoy!
